How to enable a custom avatar using Gravatar

So, you might be wondering: “How the heck does SD have his own custom avatar on this site?”

I mean, Worpdress is assigning a seemingly random one and you have no control over it. You are somewhat taken aback or just wanna know what is going on. I was like that too and was scratching my head trying to figure out what the whole deal was.

Maybe you want to know and actually DO something to change it.

Well look no further, because it’s really quite simple to do.

Enter Gravatars, which stands for ‘Globally Recognized Avatars’. They are used by many software installs around the world and it is an easy way for you to carry around a ‘presence’ when commenting on blogs, forum software and many others.

It attaches to your email and if enabled by the site will ‘automagically’ show up as your avatar on that site. From the site description:

Your Gravatar is an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums, so why not on any site?

So go there, signup, attach an image to your email (note: you can add more than one email, as I have done) and carry your avatar with you! :rawk:

I will be adding Gravatar functionality for UBB.threads as a modification down the line, unless Rick has plans to do this already. Version 8 has so many new and cool features, that I can’t remember off the top of my head whether this is slated as stock code or not.

Stay tuned
